Definitions

Why is 30% Important? The US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the US Census determine housing affordability using the percent of income spent on housing. Housing costs that exceed 30 percent of monthly household income are viewed as an indication that housing may be too expensive for residents. (Used in chart and map)

Units Built Before 1970: This is the percent of total housing units that were built before 1970. This is an important figure when looking at local housing because it indicates the number of units that may be outdated or unsafe for habitation. (Used in map)
